Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our opening sequence took place at the college which immediately represents the middle class social group. The costume of the female character also showed this, she had on a black jacket with leggings and white plimsolls. The costume of the girl consists of everyday wear which is worn by middle class students, however the teacher did not has appropriate costume. He was wearing chinos, a white t-shirt and a leather jacket with vans, the representation is not good as you would not see a teacher wearing these clothes typically but this is due to last minute actors standing in.
The female character who is being stalked is clearly young, this is used a lot throughout thrillers as they are seen as more vulnerable characters and less intelligent. Our actor resembles young females in other thriller where they are average teenagers but in our production like many others, we used the setting of the college to make the social group more obvious.

The image of the two girls is from Scream2 and the other is from our film Secured. The both show young girls looking scared but the difference is our character is alone throughout the clip which could possibly suggest she is an unsocial character and therefore an easier target for the stalker.

Another key element is the gender roles in our production. In films males are nearly always the leading stalker roles due to there stereotypical masculine attitudes. For example they are seen as more dominant and violent and therefore women are not usually the type to stalk people, hence why we used a male teacher. Females are always see as feminine and more fragile which is exaggerated within films and creates them to be extremely easy targets who do not usually have much power to fight back and survive.
